Cameron, I just love you so much. Spent too much time on Substack this morning responding to angry Christians, so this post was the balm I needed. And the reminder that the work of resistance is holy. You also helped me remember how much Etty Hillesum’s book moved me in college - time for a reread!
Thank you for the recommendations. I love St Oscar Romero’s words and think Dorothy Day also has words of wisdom for these times. I’m constantly repeating St Julian of Norwich’s words as a prayer to calm my soul during these troubling times.
I am not always a big fan of audiobooks, but the audio version of Patriot is superb. Read by the always impeccable Matthew Goode, it helps one stay in the narrative by having all of the Russian names properly pronounced. Thanks for all of the other recommendations. I have been giving much thought to St Oscar Romero in these times, but now will also seek out A Life Interrupted.
Oh, how magnificent! I never ever listen to audiobooks, but I might just make an exception for this one. Matthew Goode is superb indeed. Thank you for the recommendation!
Oo thank you for these. I've read God Is Not a Christian and love the way Tutu thinks. Wanting to read The Book of Joy (Tutu with the Dalai Lama) soon...
Walking into the Holocaust Museum after I read this today. Sobering visit to the capitol this week - a sunny walk around the hill on Tuesday admiring our institutions and a smattering of sidewalk protestors. A rainy day today to reflect on the fragility here too. Thankful for this community as I decide just how to resist daily.
I was just thinking this morning that I needed something hopeful and encouraging to read during Lent. Thank you for these recommendations. I finished Etty's book/journal in January and am looking forward now to my Lenten mornings to give me the courage I need to write into the chasm.
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing the info on the new Mariposas book! I read ITTOTB in college and loved it so much, I've got the new one on my wish list now!

Oh goodness, yes, three of my heroes! So grateful for all three of them.

Oh wow, how powerful. I'm so glad you're here, and you are not alone. Also discerning daily how best to resist.
